Heat Pumps – What are They?

Repair | Replacement | Maintenance

If you’re building a new home or you’re considering replacing the HVAC system in the home you’re already living in, it might be helpful to introduce heat pumps to you in case you’re not already familiar with them.

Stated simply, a heat pump works by extracting heat from one area and transferring it to another. Heat pumps accomplish this by circulating refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation.

During this cycling process, a compressor pumps refrigerant through two exchanger coils. In the first, the coil with low pressure, refrigerant evaporates and absorbs heat from its surroundings. The second, high pressure coil condenses the refrigerant, allowing it to release heat.

It’s also important to note that heat pumps are completely reversible. That means they can extract cool air from their surroundings and release it, helping to keep your home or business cool and comfortable during the hottest months of the year.

Finally, there are two types of heat pumps, air-source and ground-source units. Both can provide warm air during the winter and cooler indoor temperatures during the summer. The difference is that an air-source heat pump will absorb or expel heat from the surrounding air.

In contrast, a ground-source unit extracts or expels heat from either the ground or a ground-water source.

The great advantage of a heat pump is that it’s a great way to both cool and heat your home, providing a two-in-one temperature control system.

We all know, of course, how severe our Missouri winters can be, and if your heating system is struggling to keep you warm, a heat pump might be your solution. When you pair your furnace with a heat pump, that can reduce the workload on your furnace and provide energy efficient savings.
