8 Signs It's Time to Replace Your HVAC System

1. Equipment is 10 Years Old or Older

A system this old is running on outdated equipment and cannot function at the efficiency of the latest technology. Newer systems are quieter, cost less to operate, and more easily keep your home at your desired temperature.

Additionally, the EPA is mandating a phase out of R-22 refrigerant for the more environmentally friendly alternative, R-410A.

If your current system utilizes R-22 refrigerant, it’s going to quickly become very costly to replace.

2. Increased Running Time

If your heating and cooling system requires longer and longer to reach the settings entered on your thermostat, that’s a good signal that it’s reaching the end of its life.

When your system requires more operation time, it is using more electricity and costing you more money on your utility bills.

3. Operates Loudly

If your HVAC system creates lots of noise as it functions, that means something is off.

This is especially worrisome if the equipment is making loud banging noises.

4. Repairman is on Speed Dial

If you find yourself calling the HVAC repairman multiple times per year to come work on your heating and cooling system to get it back up and running, it may be time to consider replacing the equipment.

In the long run, a newer, more efficient system that requires less work will be cheaper.

5. No Regular Maintenance

Just like a car, heating and air conditioning systems require regular maintenance. Most HVAC companies recommend a visit from an experienced technician twice per year, once in the spring and another in the fall.

If you’ve not performed regular maintenance on your equipment, that’s contributed to a shorter lifespan for the system and increases the risk of costly repairs.

6. Energy Bills Through the Roof

Have you noticed that your energy bills are getting higher and higher year after year?

This could be a sign that your HVAC system is struggling to keep your home at your desired indoor temperature.

Upgrading to newer, more energy efficient equipment is a great way to cut back on your monthly utility bills.

7. Uneven Temperatures Throughout the Home

When one room is freezing all the time while others seem unbearably warm, that points to a significant issue with your HVAC system.

As systems get older, they become less capable of maintaining optimal indoor comfort levels.

8. Selling Your Home? Command a Higher Price

If you’re selling your home, installing brand new HVAC equipment is a great to increase resale value.
